The Search for Solutions

A nine part television series, produced by J.C. Crimmins for PBS. Music composed, arranged and performed by Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays. The stated purpose of “The Search for Solutions” is to stimulate interest in science and technology, primarily among the young. The film comprises nine 18-minute sections touching on various aspects of scientific inquiry that its makers say can be shown as a whole, as it is in this engagement, or in any combination of its parts.

Alice in Wonderful Kitchen

Yaemori Alice is a chef with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) whose favorite phrase is “Cooking is chemistry.” She’s not good at communicating with people, but has an amazing memory, and holds a vast amount of knowledge, especially in her favorite subject, chemistry. A mysterious young man called Sakae Kousei shows up at the popular restaurant “Alice no Okate” looking for a live-in part time job, which is run by Alice’s childhood friend. Although Kousei seems abrasive and unfriendly, he is kind at heart, and though at first he is confused by Alice’s actions and words, he gradually comes to support her. Under the watchful eye of her protective father Shingo, an openly gay university professor, Alice works at her own pace and warms everyone’s hearts with delicious food. However, there is a big secret about her upbringing and her family that even she herself didn’t know about.

The Revanche

Talented and ambitious Valentina dreams of succeeding in science. However, her life is turned upside down when she finds herself in the center of dangerous intrigues. On the eve of her 23rd birthday, Valentina is faced with the betrayal of people she trusted. A close person fabricates accusations against Valentina, as a result of which she loses everything: her fiancé, her home and the trust of others. Valentina enters into a merciless struggle for justice and love, and realizes that the main thing on this path is not to lose her own humanity.

In the 1950s, Elizabeth Zott's dream of being a scientist is challenged by a society that says women belong in the domestic sphere. She accepts a job on a TV cooking show and sets out to teach a nation of overlooked housewives way more than recipes.

In 1964, director Adrian Cowell and cameraman Chris Menges went to mountainous eastern Burma to film the Shan revolutionary forces fighting a bloody civil war against the military dictatorship. The impoverished Shans had only one way to finance the war: opium. Cowell has returned several times over the last 30 years to record the ongoing civil war and the burgeoning opium trade. The first and last episodes are produced in association with WGBH/FRONTLINE.

Pawn Stars UK is a British reality television series which debuted on 26 August 2013. The series is filmed in the Chester, Sealand, United Kingdom, and chronicles the day-to-day activities of pawn shop Regal Pawn, collaboratively run by Mark Andrew Manning, Mark Lever Holland, Mark Peter Holland, Simon Penworth, and Victoria Manning. A spin-off of the prominent American reality television series Pawn Stars, the show's format is similar to the latter show, as it features an array of collectible, antique and unusual items that people sell or pawn.

Extreme Archaeology

A new Channel 4 series takes archaeology to the edge this summer as a team of experts tackles sites across the country that are beyond the reach of normal investigations. In Extreme Archaeology, an eight-part series starting on 20 June, a team of archaeologists with help from top climbers, cavers and divers investigates amazing and unique archaeological sites throughout the UK. Many archaeological locations are beyond the reach of your average archaeologist. They are found in inaccessible caves, on treacherous cliffs, deep under water, or in locations simply too remote or dangerous for normal investigation. Their remoteness often means that their secrets are unique, but they can also be under threat from erosion or other factors and this adds a rescue element to any investigation. Using some of the most advanced scientific equipment available, and high-tech miniature cameras and communication systems to record the action, Extreme Archaeology's experts are dropped into extreme and inaccessible environments under time and other pressures that test their personal and professional skills to the limit.
