Overview

“CINDERELLA is a musical treatment of the fairy tale. I have broken apart the story and set it as a mechanical game with a series of repetitions where CINDERELLA is projected back and forth like a ping-pong ball between the hearth and the castle. She never succeeds in satisfying the requirements of the ‘Cinderella Game’. The film was shot MOS, the dialogue is lip-synched, and along with the out-front score and effects track magnifies the film’s sense of alienation.” — E.B. 1984 - Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in 2017.

The Letter

A collaborative piece by Gore and Beckett, the film begins with one of Gore's characters composing a letter, to eventual mail it. Beckett's animation takes over at this point, transforming the envelope into a looping, cascading form that seems to be perpetually turning itself inside out. A brief Gore finale bookends the piece, which is one of only two extant examples of Gore's unique animation work. This film is usually appended to Gore's own Dream of the Sphinx. Before breakfast

A man, whom we don't identify, kills himself with his razor because he can no longer bear the complaints of his wife, whose face we can't see well either. An impressionistic work with very close shots that cut out reality until, for example, the faces of the characters are omitted. A kind of description and brief chronicle of daily life in a house for a few minutes serves as a framework for the irruption of an unusual tragedy. Filmed without sound, it lacks any subsequent dialogue, although a piano band with a jazzy air has been added.
