Joan of Arc at the Stake

On November 17, 2012, Oscar-winning French actress Marion Cotillard joined the Barcelona Symphony and Catalonia National Orchestra for a performance of Arthur Honegger’s oratorio Joan of Arc at the Stake (Jeanne d'Arc au Bûcher) at the L'Auditori de Barcelona in Spain, broadcast live on Medici.tv. By Swiss composer Arthur Honegger, Jeanne d'Arc au Bûcher (1938) is an imposing oratorio. The libretto is a highly original creation by French poet and playwright Paul Claudel, who dramatises the last moments of the martyr's life. Originally written for actress Ida Rubinstein, the oratorio is written as a flashback in which Joan recalls her life, just before she dies. Honegger creates visually evocative ambiances and fills the orchestra with new sounds (saxophones, ondes Martenot). The initial prologue to the piece was added in 1944 as a symbol of the resistance during the Nazi occupation of France: again, Joan goes beyond her own story.

The phenomenal German trumpeter Reinhold Friedrich and the Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra Ostrava conducted by H. M. Förster. Renowned German trumpeter Reinhold Friedrich, honorary professor at London's Royal Academy of Music, who has collaborated with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestre Philharmonique de la Radio France, among others, has now joined forces with the Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra Ostrava, conducted by its chief conductor H. M. Förster, for his solo project. Their performance in Ostrava included Ernest Bloch's Proclamation for Trumpet and Orchestra and Tomasi's Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra. Hip Hop Symphonique 7

Never before has Hip Hop Symphonique offered such an extensive program: no less than 14 rappers and the musicians of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and 10 musicians from the live band The Ice Kream perform on the Auditorium stage in front of an audience of 1,200. This new edition features a unique artistic encounter between the beatbox group Berywam, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and The Ice Kream, the presence of dancers, a prima ballerina, a gospel choir and the exceptional participation of Jean-Pascal Zadi.
