The Creative Person: The Folksinger

Three of the top folksinger-composers - Tom Paxton, Phil Ochs, and Buffy Sainte-Marie - are featured here. These are the new "city" folksingers whose songs are strictly topical, commenting on the political and social issues of the day. Pete Seeger, an earlier singer in a similar tradition, talks about what the younger singer-composers are attempting to do and about their forerunners, such as Woody Guthrie and Aunt Molly Jackson.

Wilhelm fights to write something entertaining amongst the sea of dry, non-fiction books they write and he sets about collecting oral-tradition fairy tales to put into print. Their life story is countered with reenactments of three of their stories including "The Dancing Princess," "The Cobbler and the Elves" and "The Singing Bone."

Nirvana: With the Lights Out

Highlighted on the With The Lights Out DVD is a previously unreleased video of nine songs performed in 1988 at bassist Krist Novoselic's mother's house in Aberdeen, Washington; the rare "In Bloom" Sub Pop music video, and 10 never-before-seen live performances. Many older people have nostalgia for the hits of their youth. Knowing this, we decided to create a musical film where popular melodies of 30-40 years were played, such as "Splash of Champagne", "Carioca", "Tiko-tiko", "Joseph", "No need to be sad", etc. The film is structured as a conversation between a pop singer (Vera Beradze) and a collector of old records (Boris Shcherbakov). After the selected record is put on the gramophone and a familiar melody sounds, the old collector suddenly appears in the frame with the singer and transforms into a brave Mexican, then a playboy, or a guy from the outskirts of Moscow, depending on the song being played.

Their discussion turns into a row, and the police have to intervene. Matty goes home, the trunk of her car dancing up and down. Back in her apartment, Matty takes a hot bath to recover from the afternoon’s emotionswhen the phone rings. It’s Johnny, apologizing for his behaviour on the parking lot. Matty tells him to stay out of her life. A dramatic comedy begins about a woman whose soul is full of dents and bruises.
